Welcome to Lake County Audubon Society

We connect people with nature by promoting appreciation, enjoyment, and understanding of birds, wildlife and the natural world. We work together in Lake County to protect birds and the places they need, today and tomorrow.

- Mission of Lake County Audubon Society

Who We Are

Lake County Audubon Society (LCAS), established in the 1970s, is an all volunteer non-profit organization affiliated with the National Audubon Society. Our passionate board and engaged members actively support the diverse birds and wildlife of Lake County, IL, while also promoting equal access to nature and the outdoors for all communities.

Program Meetings

Lake County Audubon Society holds program meetings with guest speakers about birds, natural ecosystems and conservation. The meetings are held at 7 PM on the first Monday of the month between October - May.  The meetings are open to members and non-members.

Birdscaping

Lake County Audubon Society works to create bird-friendly environments by using native plants in a practice called Birdscaping. This includes planting native flowers, grasses, trees, and shrubs that help birds and wildlife.

Our Birdscaping projects show our dedication to improving the environment by creating healthy habitats for birds and attracting pollinators. We also inform Lake County residents about the advantages and beauty of native plants in landscaping.

Lake County Audubon Society (LCAS) has established a grant program to assist with the purchase of native plants for Birdscaping projects in public places in Lake County. More information can be found here.

Bird and Nature Outings

Lake County Audubon Society promotes community engagement with nature by offering guided bird walks at birding hotspots throughout Lake County. Our walks are designed to bring together bird and nature enthusiasts of all levels, from beginners to experts.

Monitoring Projects

Community science is a form of research where members of the public contribute to the scientific process, often by collecting data that can be used to address important questions about topics like bird populations, migration patterns, and the impacts of environmental changes. These projects provide unique opportunities for community members to spend time outside and learn more about the world around them.

Lake County Audubon Society provides many ways for our members to participate in citizen science, including bluebird nest box monitoring, breeding birds surveys for the Bird Conservation Network, Christmas Bird Count, endangered piping plover monitoring and general bird monitoring along the Waukegan lakeshore through our Sharing Our Shore-Waukegan program.

Upcoming Events & Outings

Join us at our monthly meetings (October-May), partner events, volunteer events, or bird/nature outings!
