The Heroic Journeys of Migratory Birds

  • Libertyville High School 708 W Park Ave Libertyville, IL, 60048 United States (map)

Lake County is a hotspot for migratory birds making their way through the Mississippi flyway. Many of these birds fly hundreds or thousands of miles, encountering life-threatening obstacles before reaching their destinations. The National Audubon Society recently unveiled the Bird Migration Explorer, a new tool to help us learn more about the spectacular journeys they take. LCAS board member, Refugio Mariscal will walk us through the Bird Migration Explorer and examine what connects Lake County to faraway places like Corrientes, Argentina, and Yapacani, Bolivia.

Bonus: we’ll be unveiling some major changes coming soon to our website!

Refugio is a Lake County Audubon Society board member and former GIS Analyst for Audubon Great Lakes, where he employed geospatial and data analysis to advance marsh bird conservation throughout the Great Lakes region. He is currently a GIS Analyst at American Forests, working on the Tree Equity Score programs. At LCAS, Refugio manages the website, coordinates the Illinois Coastal Migratory Stopover Monitoring Program, and leads a series of bilingual nature walks in partnership with the Round Lake Area School District Bilingual Parent Advisory Committee.

This meeting will take place at 7 pm in person at Libertyville High School Studio Theater (park and enter in the back of the school) and by ZOOM.
